Pueblo City Council Tables Ordinance That Would Ban Abortions in Pueblo

FROM ACPC CEO, TAMRA AXWORTHY:

A lot has happened since we first learned of Dr. Carhart's plan to open an abortion mill in Pueblo. A lot of research was done to determine that his opening would take place largely under the radar since the zoning rules in this case do not allow for a public comment hearing. Since then, an ordinance had been proposed that would effectively neuter his efforts within our city limits by enforcing an already-standing federal law. The attorneys who worked on the drafting of that proposal were highly knowledgeable with regard to state law, federal law, and home rule city statutes. They found this avenue of action to be one that exercised our local government's rights as a home-ruled city, protected the women involved, protected our local OB/GYN community and hospitals, and would eliminate Carhart's abortion services, ensuring that our future is safe from other bad characters attempting the same. The ordinance also came with its own legal representation should the city be sued by the state upon its passing.

Many people—hundreds and thousands, actually—felt that this attempt was our best option for stopping the "Butcher of Bessemer," as he's now being referred to. However, some elected representatives began working in an effort to keep everyone's attention on the fact that the ordinance's author is from Texas rather than on the Nebraska man or the women he'll likely hurt in his clinic. Even though both sides were ultimately silenced by the city council here locally, the conversation isn't over. The legal landscape in Colorado, without a way to enforce this federal law, is one that still allows the 12,090 later-gestation (3rd trimester) babies that are aborted each year to continue being poisoned to death and forcefully removed from their mothers' wombs.

Colorado has no regulations on abortion, no protections for women, no reporting of sex trafficking crimes, no parental rights involvement, and not even a requirement that these medical procedures be done by licensed physicians. More must be done to protect women in Colorado. More must be done to hold our elected representatives accountable for the consequences of their negligent laws. The battle for life isn't over, and while it took 50 years to overturn Roe, we know Colorado will be much quicker with supporters like you keeping this topic burning in our state. Thank you so much for engaging on this issue and being part of what God is doing in Pueblo, in Colorado, and in our Nation. Bless you and keep the faith.
