Volunteer Spotlight: Tamara
Volunteers are the heart of any non-profit organization. They are the unsung heroes who often work behind-the-scenes, who deserve to be recognized. ACPC is grateful for the numerous volunteers who devote their time, talent, and energy to investing in Pueblo's women and families. ACPC currently relies on 50 active volunteers, with responsibilities ranging from Parenting Advocate, Pregnancy Options Advocate, Loss Recovery Advocate, and more! In this blog, you will learn about Tamara's volunteer experience and why she chose to work with ACPC.
Tamara’s Volunteer Story
I've always advocated for girls and young women in the workplace, aiming to make girls as competitive in science and math as boys. But when my daughter became pregnant unexpectedly, I was overwhelmed and didn't know what to do. We reached out to a pregnancy center in Kansas, and God's grace was extended to her through them. Education, support, encouragement, and guidance were all provided, just as they are here. I decided that once I retired, I would give back to my community in a similar way to what my daughter experienced.
What I love most about ACPC is that they are concerned about more than just the baby's life. They are concerned about the mother's well-being, her health, her education, and the father as well. They commit resources to help strengthen the entire family unit and reward young parents with practical gifts and resources to help them build a stronger family.
I’ve only been volunteering here for a few weeks, but hope to do it as long as I’m able. So far, I've helped with envelope "stuffing," filing, and a little cleaning. My main responsibility, however, has been to accompany young mothers when they have an ultrasound and see their babies for the first time.
It’s fulfilling to know that I am helping someone to see their baby as a baby so that they can make a more informed decision. And I'm hoping that the young people I meet will experience the same grace that my daughter did.
If you're thinking about volunteering, go for it! The staff who work at ACPC are friendly and welcoming, and they make you feel right at home. And what are you doing right now that has the potential to have such a profound impact on someone's life?
