The Latest on Colorado's New Pro-Abortion Law
From ACPC CEO, Tamra Axworthy:
On Monday, April 4th, Governor Jared Polis signed into law HB22-1279, otherwise known as RHEA, which codifies abortion up until birth in our state. This bill was rushed through by Democrats out of fear in the face of the Supreme Court's forthcoming ruling on the Dobbs case, which could overturn Roe v. Wade.
There are very few states, or even countries, that are as extreme as Colorado with regard to abortion laws. We now join the Communist countries of China and North Korea, as well as a small number of states like New York, in permitting abortion until the moment of birth for any reason. This bill also ties the hands of prosecutors aiming to seek justice for families when a baby is killed in a violent crime by specifically stating that a pre-born baby has no rights.
We were encouraged by the hundreds, or possibly thousands, of people who contacted the state congress, testified in person and online during hearings, and participated in prayer vigils and rallies opposing this bill. Ultimately, we were not successful in turning the hearts and minds of our friends on the other side of the aisle.
ACPC, however, will continue to serve women and families in the Pueblo area with professional, compassionate, and practical care. We do not benefit from their decision in any way and know that if we do our part to provide medically accurate and complete information about a woman’s options, then and only then can she make a truly informed decision regarding her pregnancy.
While we are disappointed in the outcome of RHEA and in those who’ve been called to represent the citizens of Colorado, women in Pueblo will continue to find supportive staff, the full array of options, practical material resources, parenting and family coaching, helpful community referrals, and high-quality medical services at our center.
If Roe is overturned this year, we know that even more women will be crossing into Colorado from states whose "trigger laws" will eliminate abortion in their areas. We vow here and now to be ready and willing to offer compassionate care to any and all who seek our services.
